Nikkei Nine – Japanese-Peruvian Cuisine at the Alster Lake

Nikkei Nine is the newly opened Japanese-Peruvian Restaurant at the Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten, the luxury hotel at the Inner Alster Lake in Hamburg. The restaurant aims to mix ingredients and tastes from two very different continents, making a meal at Nikkei Nine a rather unique experience.

The restaurant offers both lunch an dinner menus, both with a vast selection of dishes to choose from. The sushi menu is straight forward and lists typical items such as tuna, salmon, squid, scallop or eel and offers various plates for every taste there is. Nikkei Nine also offers grade A5 wagyu beef in various forms, such as wagyu tartar or wagyu ishiyaki (stone grilled wagyu).

Chef’s Omakase Dinner

Since there was a lot of time to kill, I had the 6-course omakase style menu. It started out with a ebi (shrimp) tempura plate alongside with a pretty amazing spicy chili sauce. Afterwards I enjoyed some marinated hamachi (yellowtail) and ika (squid) sashimi. The nigiri plate was composed of ika (squid), maguro (tuna), hamachi (yellowtail), sake (salmon) and ebi (shrimp).

With some room left, I tried some additional plates of unagi (freshwater eel), ika (squid) and sake (salmon) sashimi. Another plate with some unagi (freshwater eel), ika (squid) & chu toro (bluefin medium fatty tuna) sashimi and a final plate with ika (squid) and sake (salmon) sashimi. It was an amazing dinner with some very decent cocktails and long drinks on the side. In case you are wondering, we were 2 people, so it is not as bad as it looks.

Sushi Guide Verdict

All in all Nikkei Nine is a supreme restaurant with not much left to be desired. As part of the Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten, the new interior design clearly outpaces the decor of the previous restaurant. The menu is awesome and offers a broad selection of dishes with some nice and unexpected twists. The variety of fish could be even greater, but other than that, everything seems pretty perfect. The taste and quality of the fish is great and is only topped by very select restaurant, if at all. The drink variety is also enormous. With the whole range of the hotel’s cocktail menu available, Nikkei Nine outperforms most restaurant easily. The service was outstanding and leaves nothing to be desired. As expected from a leading hotel of the word, everything went perfectly.
